Fascias, soffits and gutters

The roofline is what keeps the roof water in the gutter and the eaves timber dry. Rotten fascias, leaking joints and gutters full of grit are a common reason a ceiling stains.

In plain terms

The eaves, explained

The fascia is the board the gutter hangs from. The soffit is the board under the overhang. When that timber is soft, the gutter loses its fall and water runs back into the eaves. Ceilings stain for that reason even when the tiles look fine from the road.

We look at the timber, not only a plastic cover. uPVC fitted over rotten wood does not stop the rot. Where a new soffit would seal the roof, we leave ventilation so the loft can still breathe, and we set the gutter so the outlet takes the water.

We do this from Hessle, across Hull, Beverley, Anlaby and Anlaby Common, Willerby, Woodmansey and the villages in between. Call 01482 627895 or use the form further down. We look at the roof before we price it. A written quote is available if you want one, and the work we agree is guaranteed for at least 12 months, and often for longer depending on the job.

The job

What you might be seeing

  • Peeling paint and soft timber at the eaves
  • Gutters overflowing at a joint or a stop-end
  • Soffits that have dropped, or birds in the eaves
  • uPVC that was fitted over rotten timber

What we do

  • Look at the timber, not just the cover
  • Replace fascias, soffits and the gutter as a run where that is what the eaves need
  • Set the falls so the outlet actually takes the water
  • Vent the roof where the new soffit would otherwise seal it up

Questions we get

Straight answers about fascias, soffits and gutters for houses in Hessle, Hull, Beverley and the villages around them.

Why are the fascias soft or peeling?

The paint has gone and the timber is wet, often because a gutter joint or a felt drip has been soaking the board. We replace the rotten timber. Painting over it does not dry it out.

Can you fit new gutters without new fascias?

Yes, if the boards behind are sound. If they are soft, a new gutter on a rotten fascia will not stay level, and the water will miss the outlet.

There are birds in the eaves. Can you close the gaps?

Yes, when the soffits are renewed. We close the gaps birds use, and we keep a path for air where the roof needs it. Blocking every hole with no ventilation can wet the timbers from condensation.

Do you clean gutters?

We clear gutters when we are already on the roof. If gutters are the only job, call 01482 627895 and we will tell you whether a visit is worth it.

uPVC or timber fascias?

uPVC in white, black or woodgrain suits most houses we work on around Hessle and Hull. Timber is the right choice where the house calls for it. We say which after we have seen the eaves.

Can overflowing gutters cause a damp ceiling?

Yes. Water that misses the gutter soaks the fascia and can track into the top of the wall. The tiles can be sound. We check the falls, the joints and the outlet, not only the roof covering.
